Advanced Soloist Course (full course description)

Application form

A progressive course focusing on each individual singer building a repertoire, training vocal techniques in the technical as well as the artistic sense, getting extensive live practise, and performing the songs with a band and in front of an audience. Also, the singers will be instructed on how to handle the press and media. A demo cd will be produced with a vocal producer to be used as an artistic "business card".

The Advanced Soloist Course is offered to singers who have already completed the 4-Month Intensive Academy or the 1-Year Singer Course through CVI. The course is for singers who hold advanced technical and artistic skills.

The course is taught as 6 seminars, 3 days each within a year. Available in Copenhagen.

The components of the course

Building a repertoire

Every professional live singer must have at least a one hour of concert repertoire. The course will challenge the singer's desires within genres and take part in the singer's building of such a repertoire. If the participant is a songwriter and has unfinished songs to bring to the course, this will also be a forum in which to work and develop further in songwriting.

Demo recording with an authorized CVI-instructor as vocal producer

During this process the singer will have the opportunity to record a demo in a professional music studio with a studio technician and with an authorized CVI-instructor as a vocal producer. The purpose is to make the singer capable of doing his/ her very best in a studio situation. Choice of material is completely up to the singer. We will, in coordination with the different participants, work out a recording schedule since this part of the course will take place aside from the established modules.

CVI concerts

The concerts serve the purpose of training live stage performance. Musicians/ band will be available for the singers. The CVI concerts will, in addition, give the singers opportunity to experiment with newly acquired tools within areas of technique, improvisation, rhythm, expression, performance, etc. It will be possible to take part in CVI concerts throughout the course of the education.

Vocal technique & performance

The vocal technique syllabus will be arranged according to the participants' needs and wishes. In this way the technical aspect of the education is personalized for every individual in the group.

During the performance portion, the singer will have the opportunity to work with personal expression, in relation to his/ her repertoire, as well as live performances, and demo recording.

Work on how to make best use of the possibilities on stage and in the studio will be done in a variety of ways. This in order to make sure that the singer appears sincere and artistically credible.

Masterclass

The masterclass consists of individual sessions in the presence of the class, in which participants sing material of their choice accompanied by a pianist, and under guidance of an instructor. Although everyone sings individually, the masterclass functions as a group lesson. The philosophy behind this is that, as a spectator, one can learn a lot from observing the other singers work with difficult parts. The idea is to address vocal weaknesses rather than strengths. In this way the singer learns to confront vocal problems and solve them, in order to eliminate the problems from their singing altogether.

Booking and business know-how

In this portion, we will go through music business related subjects such as booking, handling the press, managers, publishing houses, record companies, showcases, Koda, equity, royalties, unions ect. Besides the general considerations, our starting point will be individual cases, for example concerning the "shopping/ pitching" of demo recordings to the most interesting companies within the style of the singer and demo in question.

Ambitions and time planning

We will attempt to make concrete and keep the individual singer’s ambitions and goals on track by organizing tangible plans for what the singers would like to focus on over any given period of time. There will be help at hand to make a time and action plan for what the singers can do to reach their goals.

Upon completion of the course, the goal is for every singer to have acquired a live repertoire, an "artistic business card" containing chosen and personal material, a demo recording, a live dvd and a press release, with which the singers can book gigs and furthermore present themselves to record companies.

Media training

In this subject the singers will learn about the "media machine" so they can come closer to communicating the intended message. Media training is personalized for every singer's needs and qualifications. The media contact is also trained through practical exercises, taking into account press material as well as tv-training.
